Presented by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT). The 11th annual Spring Symposium will focus on a critical concern for all of us – water conservation challenges and landscape use. The current and forecast weather conditions in Texas are dire – high temperature and low precipitation records are being made across the state, surface reservoirs and aquifer levels are reaching critically low levels, and with a return and forecasted strengthening of the La Niña climate phenomenon, the Texas drought is expected to persist through at least the summer of 2012. Come learn what you can do to prepare for water shortages now and in the future.

    Rainwater Harvesting

Northside Independent School District presents an overview of rainwater harvesting.

Our most precious commodity is water yet we seem to know so little about conserving it. Texas Rainfall Catchment is helping people design and build affordable rainwater systems so we can use this scarce resource 'water' in an environmentally friendly way. An overview will be given on rainwater harvesting, water conservation, different grades of water and what types of containers can be used for catching rainwater.

    Rainwater Harvesting Hands-On

Northside Independent School District presents a workshop on how to build a rain barrel.

Rainwater is something we take for granted. This past year has been one of the worst droughts. What if you had a rainwater harvest system at your home so when it did rain you were able to use that resource to it fullest? Texas Rainfall Catchment program will show you how to make a rain catchment system out of a recycled food grade 55 gallon barrel. You can have a try at drilling a hole for the fittings and installing them onto a barrel. Handouts and instructions will be provided. Depending on the interest level you may be able to order rain barrels at a fee of $95 each.
